When the stove finds you

We are always pleased when the stove serves its users well. We like to listen to their stories and sometimes they are really interesting. We are often pleasantly surprised that stoves with a production label from 2000 still heat reliably even after 20 years. Therefore, we do not want to keep Mr. Mark's story to ourselves, so we give him the floor:

Back to the roots. After many years of living abroad, I eventually made a move and relocated back to Czechia in December 2020. I did not want to opt for a rental in the city, so I decided to spend my winter in the family owned cottage, which is located between Middle Bohemia and Pilsen region. From my childhood I remember spending weekends here with my siblings and parents who took great pleasure in renovating this 19th century, country house with no proper insulation and one meter wide stone walls. Year by year, each and every late autumn the property was prepared for winter sleep, waiting patiently to be awaken until the next spring. From that you can guess, that there was very limited/non existing knowledge about what to expect during winter, especially for those brave ones who took their chances. The only solid fact was, that the Grand Max Haas+Sohn log burner with exchanger came as a part of the inventory of the cottage. Needless to say, that until this winter the log burner was occasionally used, preferably to create ambiance after a hard day of labour in the garden or around the house. In other words, the potential of the log burner has not been unleashed. Yet.

It all suddenly changed in December, when the first freezing winter nights arrived, with temperatures dropping down below zero degrees. We are talking Celsius, not Fahrenheit. Due to electricity prices no one really wants to use obsolete, but working DIY electric heater/boiler all winter long especially, if there is a barn full of dry wood. Saying, that the Grand Max log burner with exchanger from Haas+Sohn made all the difference. It’s been diligently heating up the living room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, workshop and utility room. The beautiful radiating heat that only can be produced by fireplace cannot be experienced in the city’s block of flats or residential buildings equipped with central heating. As soon as the water in the exchanger of the log burner reaches the set temperature, only then it can be released into the radiators and heating system, leaving the electric boiler in the background. And you save money at the same time. It is not only the specific cozy heat, that is so ambient, but also the visual effects of watching the fire mesmerizes you. Name one person, who does not enjoy staring into the flames erratically dancing into their own tune.

Within a few weeks this deserted countryside property turned into an oasis with perfect climate. I am not saying that everything happened immediately. Good things take time. So did the understanding of the log burner, its thermostat that controls the pump that circulates hot water into the system. It is kind of balancing act to set simultaneously both electric and log burner’s exchanger systems in harmony that they supplements each other. In order to do that you would need a help of heating engineer or just learn by doing, observing the system, day by day, hit and miss, trial and error – or call technical support from Haas+Sohn Rukov. They know what they are talking about. The basic principles of heating science are non negotiable though - quality dry wood, and regular cleaning. Then you will be rewarded.

Warmth of home is where you make it. I’ve made my decision. How about you?
